M5: Globular Cluster in the constellation Serpens. June 06, 2005. This is one of the brightest globular clusters in the sky-it is also among one of the oldest object in the night time sky as well -perhaps nearly 13 billion years old. This photo is poignant for me as I made it the evening after learning of the death of one of my old climbing partners from MIT-Rob Milne. Rob and I shared many adventures in Colorado and New England-sometimes under brilliantly clear skies and sometimes in the stormiest of conditions....Rob died a scant 500 meters from the summit of Mt Everest on June 05,2005. He was a true mountaineer and a brilliant star of a person.....AP 152, f/12. Canon 10D, Colorado Springs
